When and where is the volunteer meeting? top
A1: With the implementation of the new registration and scheduling system, we will provide volunteers with two opportunities for orientation. Whether its your first time or you're a 9 year veteran, orientation is vital this year. The first orientation is Wednesday, May 28th and the final one is Wed., June 4th. Both meetings will begin promptly at 6:15 PM and last one hour, so you have plenty of time to get to the 7:30pm movie. Those in attendance will be offered a discounted ticket to that evenings 7:30pm screening. The room at the MACC will be announced here when confirmed.
How many movie passes do we get for volunteering and are they transferable? top
A2: Each 4 hour volunteer shift entitles you to the equivalent of $30 in tickets (2 for the Festival, 1 for Wed. night films showing throughout the year). The Celestial Cinema is $20 per ticket. Screenings at the MACC (Castle & McCoy Theaters) and the Digital Skydome at the Marriott in Wailea are $10. The tickets ARE transferable but not resellable.
Do we get to eat if we volunteer for an event where there is food? top
A3: No. Everyone is expected to eat before their shift, or buy dinner from the vendors at the event when they are finished with their shift. This is an ongoing issue and is the policy every year. Please do not volunteer for a food event if this is a temptation you simply cannot overcome. See next Q & A.
Is there a special volunteer price for the Taste of Wailea? top
A4: Sorry, No. If you want to enjoy this fabulous event, please buy a ticket.
Where do we park? top
A5: At the Wailea Golf Resort BLUE COURSE. Heading south past the resorts at Wailea, turn left at the intersection just past the Kea Lani. Look for the volunteer parking lot and the extremely helpful and friendly security guard stationed there. You will be shuttled to and from the event site at the Gold Course/Seawatch. Check in at the Volunteer Desk upon arrival, which is to the left of the main entrance where movie patrons enter.
What do we wear? top
A6: Kaki or Black colored shorts, slacks or skirts. You will be provided with a Maui Film Festival T-Shirt. If you are working multiple days, please be sure it is clean. Also, be prepared for chillier evening weather conditions, especially at the Celestial Cinema, and plan to put your volunteer shirt on over the warmer layer.
What can I volunteer for if I don't want to do anything menial or be stuck in a parking lot? top
A7: Representing the Maui Film Festival at Wailea is an opportunity to lend your valuable support to a unique world class event (actually considered the world's best June film fest!). Every single volunteer position is important. MFF@Wailea volunteers need to be willing to spend 4 hours in vigilant and attentive service to paying customers and fellow volunteers. Some people have the impression that they can put in their minimum effort for an hour or two and then plop down and see a movie. This is not the case. Those that abuse the privilege of representing the MFF@W as a volunteer will not be invited in the future. After 8 years of doing this, I know who has the volunteer spirit and who doesn't ;-) and I update my notes every year.
What kind of volunteer positions do you need the most? top
A8: We will be utilizing more paid professional security for many of the security positions this year, but there are still volunteer posts that may be viewed as "less than glamorous". The operations of the festival are just like any living entity. A lot of "stuff" is brought in and a lot of waste is managed, organized and discarded. Monitor/Clean Up people understand the spirit of volunteerism and what it takes to pull off a world class event. Late night shifts are from 9pm-1am. These are difficult to fill positions.
What if I don't show up for my volunteer time slot (for any reason)? top
A9: You will be asked to return any tickets you where issued for that shift and invoiced $10 for every ticket you received that was not honored via volunteering, regardless of whether you viewed any movies. You will also inconvenience a lot of other volunteers who will have to do double duty on your behalf.
Do I get to wear a badge and carry a big stick? top
A10: If your incentive for being a volunteer is to live out your authority fantasies and throw your weight around, please reconsider. Volunteers are expected to put paying patrons needs first and to treat other volunteers with equanimity and respect. You will have your own opportunity to be served by friendly and helpful volunteers on your nights to be a patron.
